What to Pack for Your Bariatric Surgery Hospital Bag: The Ultimate Checklist

This post contains affiliate links. Although I may receive a tiny commission, I only recommend things I truly believe in and love.

Hey there! So, surgery day is coming up, and you’re probably wondering, “What the heck do I pack in my hospital bag?” I mean, you don’t want to show up with everything but the kitchen sink, but you also don’t want to forget something important either, right?

No worries, I’ve got you! Here’s your guide to packing the perfect hospital bag so you can focus on what really matters—getting ready for your big transformation!

1. Comfort is Key: Loose Clothes

Let’s be real, you’re not going to want to be in anything tight or restrictive after surgery. Pack the comfiest, softest, loosest clothes you can find—think stretchy leggings or sweatpants, loose tees, or even a cute robe. You’ll thank me when you’re walking those hospital hallways post-op.

Pro Tip: Consider a pair of slip-on shoes or slippers. Bending over to tie anything post-surgery? Nope. Ain’t happening.

2. Toiletries, But Keep It Simple

You’re not going to need your full beauty routine here, but the essentials are a must. Think travel-size shampoo, conditioner, face wash, deodorant, and a toothbrush. Oh, and don’t forget lip balm! Hospitals tend to be super dry, and your lips will definitely feel it.

Pro Tip: Pack dry shampoo if you’re not feeling up to a full-on hair wash.

3. Phone Charger (With a Long Cable!)

Trust me on this—hospital outlets are never where you want them to be. A long phone charger will be your new best friend. You’re going to want your phone for entertainment, staying in touch with loved ones, and, let’s be honest, posting those post-surgery selfies.

4. Your Own Pillow

Hospital pillows are… hospital pillows. If you want to feel cozy and more like yourself, bring your own pillow from home. It’ll make those naps (and let’s face it, you’ll be taking a lot of them) way more comfortable.

Pro Tip: Bring a pillow for the car ride home, too. Holding it against your stomach can help with any bumps in the road.

5. A Little Entertainment

You’re going to have some downtime. Sure, you’ll be resting and recovering, but it’s nice to have something to pass the time when you’re not napping or walking the halls. Bring a book, download some podcasts, or have your favorite Netflix shows queued up. Just make sure you’ve got headphones!

6. Chapstick, Lotion, and Facial Wipes

Hospitals can make your skin feel like a desert, so be prepared! Your lips will likely be super dry, so chapstick is an absolute must. Some unscented lotion and facial wipes will also help you feel refreshed when you’re not quite ready for the whole shower situation yet.

7. Bariatric-Friendly Broth or Protein Drinks

My bariatric clinic actually requests that you bring two bottles of a clear protein drink to the hospital. I personally enjoyed these during the pre-op phase so that’s what I packed with me. Most hospitals, of course, will provide some liquids post-op, but if you have a favorite protein drink or broth that you know you like, pack it. It can be comforting to have something familiar when you’re ready to start sipping.

8. Important Documents

You’ll need your ID, insurance card, and any paperwork your surgeon or hospital has asked you to bring. It’s best to have these in a small folder or envelope so you can easily access them when checking in.

9. Compression Socks

These bad boys will help prevent blood clots and keep the circulation in your legs going strong while you’re recovering. Most hospitals will provide them, but if you’ve got your own, why not bring them?

10. Positive Vibes

Okay, this one isn’t exactly something you can pack, but it’s just as important. Going into bariatric surgery can be nerve-wracking, but keeping a positive mindset will make a huge difference. You’re about to start a brand new chapter of your life, and that’s something to be excited about!

Bonus: Items for home

Heating pad – I used on my belly on a very low setting and it brought some slight comfort.

Recliner to sleep. I personally sleep fine on my bed but I have heard a lot from fellow bariatric surgery patients who say they could not lie down flat on their bed, and propped up on pillows wasn’t enough, so they slept sitting in a recliner. I don’t recommend going to buy a brand new or anything but this is an idea if you have one already.
